Admission Criteria – Same Day Surgery
Purpose
To outline the process for Admission to Same Day Surgery and required documentation at all surgical sites within Southern Health-Santé Sud.
Policy Number
Background
- No regionally approved forms.
- No consistent practice across all surgical sites.
Key Message
- Same day surgery can be safely performed on an outpatient basis when local, regional (spinal, epidural, nerve block) general or conscious sedation is the anesthetic of choice.
- Same day surgery reduces waiting time for the patient and reduces the demand on hospital beds.
- Same day surgery provides education to the patient about perioperative events, and addresses the patient’s questions and concerns about the perioperative experience.
Recommendation(s)/Action Required
- CRNs at surgical sites review updates and form with staff.
- Ensure updated forms are available for use and remove any copies of old forms, including those in ‘draft’ form.
- Use this form to record participation in huddle sessions.
