Measles Update and Staff Immunity Reminder
This memo is to provide an important reminder that measles is still circulating, and we continue to receive cases in our region.
While vaccination provides excellent protection, even staff with confirmed immunity have a small risk (approximately 3%) of developing “breakthrough measles.” In these cases, symptoms are often milder and shorter in duration; however, the individual can still spread the virus to others.
Measles Immunity
All staff are strongly encouraged to ensure they have either:
- Two documented doses of MMR vaccine, or
- Lab-documented proof of immunity
If you are unsure of your status, please contact your Site Infection Prevention & Control (IPC).
Exposure Monitoring (All Staff)
Any staff member with an unprotected exposure, regardless of immunity status, must:
- Self-monitor for symptoms from Day 5 to Day 21 following the date of exposure.
Key Clinical Facts
- Incubation period:
Average 14 days (range: 7–21 days from exposure to rash onset) - Period of communicability:
Measles is contagious from 4 days before rash onset to 4 days after rash onset
Why This Matters
Even mild or breakthrough cases can lead to transmission in health care settings. Early recognition, appropriate precautions, and confirmed immunity are essential to protect our patients, coworkers, and communities.
Thank you for your continued commitment to patient and staff safety.
