Non-Physical Suffering | Our Collective Struggle in Palliative Care

(Organized by the WRHA Palliative Care Program)

Non-physical suffering is suffering that may be emotional, psychological, social, spiritual and/or existential in nature. This lecture will share research findings highlighting why palliative care clinicians find working with patients’ non-physical suffering to be one of the most challenging parts of the work, even decades into their practice. Not only do clinicians struggle in their work with patients’ non-physical suffering, but patients also struggle to share their non-physical suffering with clinicians. These and other barriers keep non-physical suffering from being explored, and ultimately, supported. This lecture will shine a light on this under-researched and under- acknowledged aspect of palliative care provision, offering tips and insights for front-line practice.
