Toronto Bedside Swallowing Screening Test (TOR-BSST)

An evidence-based screening tool implemented by Southern Health-Santé Sud as part of the stroke strategy. This screening tool is used to determine patients at risk of dysphagia following a CVA or TIA.

Learning Objectives

• To ensure accuracy and reliability amongst the nurses who will administer the TOR-BSST.
• To determine if oral intake can be safely initiated (including medications) post CVA.
• To determine when to refer to a Speech-language Pathologist for complete dysphagia assessment.

Who should attend: nursing staff from medical, rehab & emergency departments in acute care facilities.
