Cultural Safety Series | Lunch & Learn (Virtual)

This 1-hour session is about Dakota & Anishinaabe Sweat Lodge Ceremony Teachings.

Who should attend: all staff are welcome.

Registration is not required.

Knowledge Holders

Darryl Taylor is Santee Dakota from Portage la Prairie, known traditionally as inyan tatanka wicasa (Buffalostone man). He works as an Indigenous Heritage Consultant, earned a horticulture degree from Assiniboine Community College and a certificate from Circle of Reconciliation Commission. Darryl has worked with many businesses as a liaison and in Indigenous engagement roles. Darryl volunteers as a board member at the Fort La Reine Museum and Portage la Prairie’s Assisted Community Living, supporting cultural awareness in the Portage la Prairie School Division. He has been a Sundancer for 30 years, a Knowledge Holder and Lodge Keeper who established a Sweat Lodge in Island Park in Portage la Prairie.

Debbie Parker is a respected member of the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation and a Knowledge Holder with Anishinaabe,
Dakota, and Nakota teachings. She has dedicated many years to sharing cultural teachings, facilitating at schools and for professionals. Debbie leads Full Moon ceremonies and women’s healing teachings, fostering community and spiritual growth. As a Lodge Keeper, she invites individuals to Island Park in Portage La Prairie for Sweat Ceremonies. Debbie’s professional journey includes work as an addiction counselor and youth care worker, with significant contributions at the Portage Friendship Center. Her holistic approach to healing and dedication to preserving cultural heritage make her an invaluable asset to her community.
