Training in Test of Texture Modified Diets (TTMD-R) | New Facilitators (Nurses)

In compliance with the Manitoba Health Guidelines and Southern Health-Santé Sud Policy Safe Feeding and Swallowing Program in Personal Care Home (CLI.6410.PL.005), the participant will be trained to use the Safe Feeding & Swallowing Program in PCH TTMD-R Feeding & Swallowing Screening Form (CLI.6410.PL.005.SD.01), and review the referral process for a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and/or occupational therapist.

Discussion will also include:

  • normal & abnormal swallowing
  • diet texture modifications/consistencies
  • liquid viscositites
  • safe feeding strategies
  • signs/symptoms of aspiration
  • family counseling
  • ethical decisions

TTMD-R Facilitators and Meal Screeners must complete testing and screening education prior to administering the test, or screening, and then every two years. Education is provided by a SLP, and ideally, a dietitian provides education about texture modification. There will be a minimum ratio of one full time equivalency (1 FTE) TTMD Facilitator per 15 residents.

Who should attend:  includes Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and Registered Dietitians (RDs) working in personal care homes. These staff will attend the entire day and be TTMD-R Facilitators.
