The Nurse-to-Patient Ratio (NPR) Sub-Committee, which brings together employers, the Manitoba Government, and the Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU), has the shared goal of setting NPRs. NPRs reduce patient mortality, shorten hospital stays, and lower readmission rates, while leading to fewer vacancies, lower turnover, and less burnout—all while improving job satisfaction. A critical part of setting NPRs is to engage directly with nurses across Manitoba to ensure your voices are heard. Your frontline experience and professional insight are essential to shaping a Made-in-Manitoba framework that supports safe, high-quality patient care across the province. As such, the sub-committee is seeking input from nurses through a phase of surveys.

The first survey ran in July and had considerable uptake. We thank the many nurses who completed this survey and provided their valuable feedback. The strong response rate and breadth of feedback will help ensure that the input provided to the NPR Sub-Committee is comprehensive and reflects the realities of nursing practice in Manitoba.

The second survey is specifically focused on acute care settings and will be open from September 9 – 23, 2025 in which all nurses will have received an email invitation from Survey Monkey via the Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU). The total time to complete the survey is approximately 15 minutes. If you do not work in an acute care setting, there is still an opportunity for you to complete the general questions if you did not already do so in the first survey in July.

Every nurse’s voice is essential. A third survey is in development and will be released in October with a focus on the remaining care settings, including public health, long-term care/PCH, addictions and mental health, along with other units, so that all nurses will have a chance to answer area-specific questions and share their thoughts and experiences with the sub-committee.
