Measles Update in Southern Health-Santé Sud
I am letting you know that the two full incubation periods are passed for the 5 cases of measles in Southern Health-Santé Sud (SH-SS), with no new cases identified in the region. Therefore, the Medical Officer of Health is officially declaring the measles outbreak over for our region.
However, please note the following situation regarding measles:
- Ongoing outbreak in Ontario
- Recent case in Winnipeg (travel related, not connected to SH-SS cases)
- Recent cases in other provinces (like Alberta)
- Ongoing outbreaks internationally, including the USA (specifically Texas most recently)
The Medical Officer of Health is encouraging clinicians/staff to:
- Remain vigilant regarding considering measles in compatible clinical presentations
- Use Airborne Precautions when providing care to all suspect/confirmed measles cases (i.e., N95 respirator)
- Continue to encourage immunization for any patients who are not up-to-date with their measles vaccines
- Report any suspected cases using Clinical Notification of Reportable Diseases or Conditions form
All Staff – Please ensure you have proof of presumptive immunity to measles, either with documentation of immunization or documented serology showing immunity to measles.
