Vitamins & Mineral Supplements

The following 3 resources have been developed in collaboration between LTC Clinical Pharmacy and LTC Clinical Nutrition:

  1. Vitamin & Mineral Supplement LTC Quick Reference Guide
    • Outlines the current evidence and LTC recommendations for 13 vitamins and minerals.
    • This document will continue to be updated with additional vitamins and minerals and as new evidence is released.
  2. Vitamin & Mineral Supplements PCH Formulary Changes – Effective February 1, 2025
    • In conjunction with the vitamins and minerals evidence review, supplements covered in Manitoba PCHs were reassessed.
    • This document outlines the vitamin & mineral supplements which will remain on PCH formulary and which will be removed from the PCH formulary (i.e., no longer covered in PCH) as of February 1, 2025.
    • Prescribers, pharmacists, dietitians, and nurses should identify residents on the vitamin and mineral supplements which will be removed from the PCH formulary and determine:
      • Is the supplement required or can it be discontinued?
      • Is there an alternative supplement listed which is covered?
      • Does the resident/family want to continue on the supplement and pay for it?
  3. Oral Iron Dosing LTC Clinical Pearl
    • Developed by: Heidi Marschall, BSc. (Pharm) Consultant Pharmacist
    • New evidence is outlined for daily or every other day dosing of oral iron supplements
