Various studies in North American hospitals have shown that 5-8% of clients will develop an infection while in hospital. These hospital acquired, or Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) may result in an extended hospital stay, physiological and psychological stress for the client, as well as, an increase in the cost of their care.

Health care facilities and programs have a responsibility to ensure that all steps possible are taken to protect clients, staff and visitors from acquiring HAIs.
