PAC-Attack

Project Status: Complete

In September 2014, a Green Belt Lean project was initiated to focus on opportunities to improve patient flow in the Pre-Op Surgery Program. A need to standardize processes and improve satisfaction and staff workload was an intended improvement. The underlying issues that were uncovered as a result of this study were:

The Surgical Clinic decision to treat process did not align with the regional booking processes.
The consult processes with the specialist- surgeons were inconsistent within the Ambulatory Care Clinic. There was no standard process to follow for the patient to be booked for surgery
Pre Op tests and assessments with anesthesia and nurses was inconsistent.
As a result the process to improve the patient flow process has since been implemented, and the patient now sees the specialist within an acceptable wait time. The booking process has also been streamlined to reflect a consistent process to consult a surgeon or book a procedure.

As a result, the following improvement were made:

Consistent surgical slating package for all surgical patients in Southern Health-Santé Sud
Pre Op clinic process for nurses to do phone assessments and histories or arrange site visit
Pre Op anesthesia consults process for Portage General Hospital, Bethesda Regional Health Centre, and Carman Memorial Hospital are working well
Pre Op anesthesia consults for patients attending Boundary Trails Health Centre remain at the medical clinics.
